What songs/bands bring back the most summer memories for you?

Mine would be The English Beat. One high school summer was dedicated to hanging out all day poolside and blasting their albums loud enough that you could hear the music in the backyard; and probably the whole neighborhood. Every day was gloriously lazy and it was the summer I had a skater boyfriend who would ride his skateboard 5 miles to my house every day. We went to huge parties in huge houses, dancing in nightclubs and took weekly trips to Santa Cruz to watch surfers and have bonfires at sunset. It was one of those summers that felt like a teen movie.

  • Maynard Ferguson - the Chameleon album.

    Hey I'm OLD, ok?

As a kid we headed down to Newport Beach every summer to visit my grandmother and cousins for a few weeks. For us, it was the sounds of the Beach Boys. Period.

    Hey, I'm OLD, ok?
    • Unsu...

P'lito, did you say you were old?

Can't wait to hear the infamous Braindamage "spin" on Friday night. Do you have your outfit picked out?
      • First memory that comes to mind when I think "summer music":

When I was a little boy and my parents and another couple with 3 kids rented two cabins in the Santa Cruz Mountains for a week- Big Basin area, I think. The kids and I would spend the days at a huge public swimming resort called Forest Pools. Just carefree days of swimming and having fun. There was a jukebox that blasted a large variety of tunes all day long. Someone, for some reason, would continuously play "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals. That song takes me right back to those days long ago.

        Hey, I’m old too.

        House of the Rising Sun

There is a house in New Orleans
        They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

        My mother was a tailor
        She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
        Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
        Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

        ------ organ solo ------

        Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
        They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

Gosh, what song do I start with?
I do recall me and my friends listening to either DEVO or The B-52's as loud as
we possibly could. The other kids at school would make fun of us. Hey it was
Modesto what can I say. Those people are probably still living in Modesto, working
at a video store, have big mall hair, long finger nails and are fat.

Also when ever I hear the song "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen it makes me
go right back to the days of summer when the big pool at the high school I ended up
going to used to open for summer. This one guy would park his car next to the pool
          and crank that song.

I also remember riding my skateboard to the mall which was about 4-5 miles away from my house. I would have on my walkman and be listening to Holly and the Italians or the Cars "Candy-O" album.

Those are a few summer memories from Modesto. Oh and for the record I have never
          been cow tipping. ;)

Also for the record I am old too, but not as old as P'Lito. ;) Sorry P'Lito I know you were expecting a short joke, but I couldn't work one in so I just went with the obvious.
          • Hey Candy, you didn't say we get to write out the entire lyrics to the songs.

            Two girls for every boy.
I got a '34 wagon and they call it a woody
            Surf City, here we come
You know it's not very cherry, it's an oldie but a goodie
            Surf City, here we come
Well it ain't got a back seat or rear window
But it still gets me where I wanna gooooooooooo

I'll be dressed in my finest Hawaiian attire - worn Ding City style.

            • man you guys are all OLD!! I have nothing more to say.

Oh there's surf bands at the Hotel Utah on Sunday.

oh Summer for me-I dunno...lots of UB40, reggae (this was San Diego after all), English Beat, hanging out at the beach, going to the mall, eating shaved ice, beach parties at Ponto beach, taking off our clothes and jumping in the ocean at 11:00 at night (and NOT getting arrested!)...ya know the usual!
          • Hey not everyone stays in Modesto...

BTW, that girl from Modesto said hi and was wondering if you were going to DJ again...
            • Summer music....I guess there are are few songs that remind me of summer.

Summer Lovin' from the Grease Sountrack. I remember one summer back when the movie came out, and I saw it twice back to back in the movie theatre (yeah, I snuck the second viewing). Me and my friends listened to that sountrack all summer long.

Also when I was 15, I got a pair of rollerskates for my birthday. I skated every day during that summer. I remember listening to Magic and Xanadu by Olivia Newton John.
              • Grease? Xanadu?!?? Mizzy, they've got 12-step programs to help with your Olivia Newton-John fetish.
                • The girl from Modesto? Aww....doesn't that tug at your heartstrings? Two young lovers from the same small town way out in the sticks meet in the big city and spark a budding romance. I can only imagine their first date with nostalgic talks about the home town.

"Where did you go to elementary school?"

"When did you drop out of school, 7th or 8th grade?"

"Which irrigation ditch did you swim in during the summer?"

"Isn't it a shame that cousins can't marry?"

Ahh..I'm getting all choked up just thinging about these two lovebirds.

                    Unsu...

                    Ha ha that was good.
the one that really got me laughing was the irrigation ditch line.
maybe I should have mentioned that in my memories of summer.

I am going out with Mizz Viva not the girl form Modesto. ;)

Oh and for those of you who haven't been to Modesto. The meaning
of "Love Birds" in Modesto is the same as Pigeons. ha ha ha ha

                    > "Aww....doesn't that tug at your heartstrings? "

Uhhm Dude, I think they are called like Valves! Did not you take Anatomy 101?

                    Geesh

                    > "Where did you go to elementary school?"

Do they even have elementary schools in Modesto?

John - Yes it was that girl.
P'lito - I would hope John was not interested, I think she was like 19 or something... very, very young (Ok, since it _is_ a club she must be 21.)

The Bubble Lounge was pretty cool last week, but I think I drove Skip crazy. I did not have anyone else to talk to since none of ya'll went down there to hang with me. I had fun hanging with the yuppies there, they do not seem to know much about Goth stuff.

Skip - Sorry for being a pesk, I did enjoy it. Ohh and so did the girl from Modesto.
  • Ahhh yes
cow tippin in upstate New York.
Endless summer skateboarding on my prized G&S Fibreflex Bowlrider. ACS Tracker trucks, and OJ urethane wheels. Keg parties and bonfires. Foosball, Pac-man, and Space Invaders at the Sub Shop.
The soundtrack to all this was provided by 92 WMJQ from Rochester... KICK ASS ROCK AND ROLL! That and select AM Gold. I'm dusting off some of my late '70s K-tel records for your enjoyment tonight!
