DECADE - some final thoughts

So the final DECADE event, our 2-Year Anniversary, took place on Friday, March 9, 2007. We had a good turnout as friends and family helped us end our little nightclub in style with a great party. There was free Champagne at midnight and Candy and Skip blew out two candles on a beautiful DECADE cake that was shared with everyone. A good time was had by all as people danced and sang along to "Guilty Pleasure" favorites and a mix of our favorite themes. The final song was "Last Dance" by Donna Summer, and we all said our tearful good-byes. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll start DECADE up again!

Pictures from the final party are posted. If anyone else has photos, please post them too.

And now a few words from Candy:

"DECADE was a fantastic experience for me. I had never produced a nightclub event and the thought of it seemed unreal. Coming up with an idea for a new club was probably one of the most entertaining parts of the process. Skip and I had some pretty outrageous concepts, but after much consideration, decided on the details for DECADE. Skip brought great experience to the process and made the learning curve for me pretty painless. An unexpected and added bonus was learning to DJ from Skip.

I think the thing I enjoyed most about DECADE was getting to know so many wonderful people. I feel like my circle of friends has increased ten fold. DECADE was always a labor of love and we wanted to expose amazing DJs and provide a social oasis for our friends. Most of all, we wanted to have fun.

I thank everyone who was involved with DECADE. From the DJs to the regulars, the bartenders, club owners, friends and family; you made it fun and you made it DECADE. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your amazing support."

And from Skip:

"Candy and I had talked about doing a club together for quite a while. Candy had been an invaluable help to me behind the scenes at New Wave City for four years, so she knew what it took to run a club. Finally we approached the owner of the Cherry Bar with this odd little concept we had come up with for a club called, DECADE.

It was always fun trying to come up with a new and interesting theme for each event. One night Candy and I sat at the bar at Strangelove and wrote down every theme idea we could come up with on a cocktail napkin. I pinned that napkin to my bulletin board and we used almost every idea on it. We only repeated a theme once when we did three "Guilty Pleasure" nights in-a-row because they were so much fun!

We loved being at Catalyst Cocktails and hope all of you will continue to support and attend events at the bar. We were so comfortable there that eventually DECADE felt like we were having a party with all of our friends in our home.

Most of all, I enjoyed the opportunity to work with Candy. She was a pleasure from beginning to end. Candy never got the credit she deserved because people would assume because of my success at NWC, that I was calling all the shots. We were, in fact, an equal partnership and at least half of the credit for keeping DECADE going for two year should go to her. And it was also extremely rewarding for me to watch as Candy progressed so rapidly into the excellent DJ that she is today."

Candy & Skip would like to thank everyone who helped make DECADE possible:
Mariah at Cherry Bar, Matt, Joanna, Jenner and Will at Catalyst, John Oyler, Tomas & Sandra, Kate, Danny, Mary, Cam & Jess, Tony, Paul & Patricia, Ryann & Gehan, Tim & Dan, David & Lynn, John, Dan, Dina, Frank, & everyone else who ever attended.

Special thanks to all the DJ’s (in order of appearance): Moonshine, Donimo, Adrian & Mysterious D, The Melting Girl, Brian Raffi, Low-Life, Andy T, John, Omar, Glimmercat, Tomas Diablo, Matt Hite, Jenny, Femme Mystique, Some Stranger, Miz Margo, Verablue, Potential, Fact 50, and Tesla Boy.

And the final song ever at DECADE…
Donna Summer - Last Dance

The final song is appropriate for two reasons- the obvious reason being the lyrics. And the other reason is because when Candy and I first talked about opening a club together, we were going to do a 70’s Disco club. Then we said, what about doing a different decade theme for every event? And then finally we ended up going with the format that you knew and loved, of a different decade every hour.
1980’s – "ROOTS OF DISCOPUNK"

And in the last half-hour, a tagteam one-song "Try to Top That" showdown!

Skip and Candy present...

DECADE - The DJ Dance Club
Every hour a different decade!
FREE ~ No Cover Charge All Night
Now on the 2nd Friday of the month

Friday, January 12th, 2007
"WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?" NIGHT
Six Degrees of Songs – Connected in Some Way
Play "What’s the Connection" and win prizes!
Two rounds starting at 10pm

9-10pm
The 1970's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) gets all Glamed up with some Bowie, some T. Rex, and maybe a dash of Roxy Music, and weaves it all together for a connected picture of 70’s music like some giant connect-the-dots portrait of Richard Nixon. Scary, and a little bad too.

10-11pm
The 1980's
DJ Candy (DECADE) starts the "What’s the Connection" contest off with a set that may include "Candy Girl" – New Edition, "Candy" – Iggy Pop, "I Want Candy" – Bow Wow Wow and still more sweet treats from the most delicious DJ around. Four out of five dentists recommend DJ Candy for their patients who eat DJ’s.

11-12am
The 1990’s
Tomas Diablo (Strangelove, Rock This Town) continues with round-two of the contest and sends you on a connected song journey through the 90’s with songs like "Pump Up the Jam" and "Pump Up the Volume". Not sure if Tomas will be dressed like Hans or Franz, but it sounds like he’s here to Pump! [handclap] You Up! Hear me now and believe me later...

12-1am
The 1980's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) spins your favorite 80’s connected songs. See if you can follow the links from Depeche Mode to Yaz to Erasure to The Cure to Duran Duran and on and on. Will he Go! or Don’t Go? Either way, as long as you Wake Me Up Before You Go Go ‘cause I’ll need a ride home at the end of the night after collapsing from dancing too hard to this set.

1am-2am
The 2000’s
DJ Candy (DECADE) spins the newest Indie, Pop, Electronica and remixes in what has quickly become a don’t-miss-this-final-set tradition that has been packing the dance floor at every event. Somehow the word must have gotten out because people are showing up just for this set. Find out what all the fuss is about.

Hostess Candy has sweet treats for you from every decade.
9pm until 2am
FREE ~ No Cover Charge All Night
21+ with valid ID

With a little help from my friends, I have amassed a rather large collection of 80's import vinyl for tonight. Now I have so much to choose from that I think I may need some help deciding what to choose. Any requests?

Skip and Candy present...

DECADE - The DJ Dance Club
Every hour a different decade!
FREE ~ No Cover Charge All Night
Now on the 2nd Friday of the month

Friday, December 8th, 2006
"Import Night"
All Imports – All Night
Passport contest – WIN prizes for worst passport photo!!

9-10pm
1960's - "BRITISH INVASION"
DJ Skip (New Wave City) takes a ferry cross the Mersey and answers the
tough questions: Why is Herman a Hermit, how come Gerry has a Pacemaker,
and why are there 5 Dave Clarks? Expect to hear from The Beatles, The
Rolling Stones, The Kinks and still more of the original Brit Pop.

10-11pm
1970's - "THE BIRTH OF BRITISH NEW WAVE"
Tomas Diablo (Strangelove, Rock This Town) jumps the big pond to explore
the roots of New Wave. Pump it up with Elvis Costello and indulge your orgasm
addiction with The Buzzcocks. Get glamed out with David Bowie and T Rex. Find
out if The Police Clash with the Sex Pistols, or if there’s still Anarchy in the U.K.

11-12am
1980’s – "ALL VINYL IMPORTS"
DJ Candy (DECADE) gets her modulated spiral groove on and drops the needle
on the record so you can dance, dance, dance. Be there as she spins herself right ‘round like polyvinyl chloride, otherwise known as those big black discs called vinyl records- remember those? Don’t miss the warmth of vinyl in this set from the likes of Echo & the Bunnymen, Killing Joke, Felt, The Chameleons and many more.

12-1am
1980's - "CANADA vs. AUSTRALIA"
DJ Skip (New Wave City) goes North and South as he tosses a Moosehead on
the barbie for a strange battle of 80's bands like: Men Without Hats vs.
Men at Work, Martha and the Muffins vs. The Split Enz, and the tag teams
of Corey Hart & Bryan Adams vs. INXS & Ice House. Be there as the fake
fur flies and the kangaroo poo hits the fan.

1am-2am
2000’s – "INDIE IMPORTS"
DJ Candy (DECADE) spins all the hot new Imports from bands like The Knife,
Shiny Toy Guns, Miss Kittin, Royksopp and more. At last month’s DECADE event,
Candy kept everyone dancing as she rocked the completely full dance floor with
killer Indie tunes all the way till closing. You won’t want to miss this set!

Hostess Candy has sweet treats for you from every decade.

Friday, November 10th, 2006
"Night of the Dead"
I Hear Dead People – All Songs By or About the Dead

"I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man over my shoulder
Waiting for an invitation to arrive
Goin' to a party where no one's still alive!"
- Oingo Boingo

9-10pm
1950’s - "THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED"
DJ Skip (New Wave City)
"Put your glad rags on and look real fine,
We'll have some fun when the clock strikes nine,
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight (or at least for an hour),
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochran, and Elvis Presley, that’s right,
We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight!"

10-11pm
1990's - "PRETEND THAT WE'RE DEAD"
DJ Tomas Diablo (Strangelove) pretends that he’s dead and then resurrects himself,
because like most guys, he wants a second coming. Behold; as the Dead Can Dance.
Witness; there is Death in Vegas. Testify; that "Elvis is Dead", and if we’re lucky, Nirvana
and Sublime will rock from beyond the grave too.
The Ramones jumped in front of a subway train,
INXS got slit in the jugular vein.
Those are people who died, died. They were all my friends, and they died!"

12-1am
Special Set – "THE CLASH vs. AC/DC"
DJ Skip (New Wave City) referees a knockdown, drag-out, no-holds-barred
death match between the best of The Clash vs. the best of AC/DC.
Only one band will be left standing, Who will it be?

1-2am
2000’s – "DEATH IN THE FUTURE"
DJ Candy (DECADE). Everyone dies, but not everyone truly listens to Dead 60's,
Miss Kittin, and Tomcraft. So, let’s make love and listen to Death from Above 1979,
and then you’ll find that death becomes her as she necro-feels-ya up!

DECADE
The DJ Dance Club
Every hour a different decade!

Friday, October 6th, 2006
"Make Me Dance Night"
The Best Dance Songs From Every Decade
FREE – No Cover All Night

"Music doesn’t make you forget your problems, but it lets you dance all over them."
-Pete Townsend

Every hour one song will be crowned "Best Dance Song of the Decade".
You vote by dancing!

9-10pm
1980’s - "NEW WAVE"
The debut of DJ Tesla Boy and the answer to the question: How is he going to wear headphones
with that big Mohawk? DJ TB will be spinning the best ‘80s dance tracks from the likes of OMD, XTC,
BC and SC (that’s Big Country and Soft Cell, if you were wondering) for your dancing pleasure.

10-11pm
1990’s - "CHEESE COVERED DANCE POP"
DJ Tomas Diablo (Strangelove) says, "I'll take the '90s, which means I can dip into great popular music,
some darker stuff, and top it off with a little cheese too. A musical smorgasbord!". And the best thing? It’s all
you can eat! Expect to hear Depeche Mode, Deee-Lite, Technotronic, Daft Punk, and a dash of Salt N' Pepa.

11-12am
1980’s – "OUT-OF-PRINT HARD-TO-FIND ‘80s 12-INCHES"
DJ John (New Wave City) whips out his big twelve inches and exposes bands like Bronski Beat, Cetu Javu,
Cube, Desireless and Until December. This is your chance to see DJ John spin while wearing a trench coat,
and nothing else.

12-1am
1970’s – "NIGHT ON DISCO MOUNTAIN"
Yeah, they were dancin' and singin' and movin' to the groovin'
and just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted
play that funky music DJ Skip from New Wave City…so I did!
Expect to get up and get down to Wild Cherry, KC & the Sunshine Band,
Earth Wind & Fire, and Abba.

1-2am
2000’s – "INDIE/DANCE POP"
DJ Candy (DECADE) cranks up the LCD Soundsystem, takes over the whole street for a Bloc Party,
produces some Gorillaz in her mist, and if you aren’t dancin’, then She Wants Revenge.

Don't be surprised to see this ad in the paper the next day-
LOST: Asses. Last seen at DECADE where they were danced off.

Hostess Candy has sweet treats for you from every decade.
9pm until 2am
FREE ~ No Cover Charge All Night

My top 5 vices...

1. Sex (Duh!)
2. Masturbation (if you can't get 1, you gotta have 2)
3. Lust (the prelude to 1 or 2)
4. Drinking (also a prelude to 1 or 2)
5. Drugs (I miss those days when people didn't look at you like you were a leper
if you said that you, on occasion, like to partake of a reality-altering substance.
And people would casually offer to share. Ahhh the '80s, good times.)
(Also, yet another prelude to 1 or 2. Anyone have any preludes?)

I'm going with Lesley Gore's version of "You Don't Own Me" , which I plan to play in my set of 60's Girl Groups.
What a perfect girl anthem-

"...I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you

I'm young, and I love to be young
I'm free, and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please..."

What's your fave?

Just got back from a week in Las Vegas. it was HOT! Literally.

So I'm hanging at the pool at Caesars Palace with all these old folks from Wichita and Yoohootieville and they all got their farmer john tans ...uh...like me.... and blaring from the pool loud speakers is Joy Division and some really early Cure. This went on ALL WEEK LONG! It was surreal.

My daughter swims up to me and says, "Dad, they're playing the Cure", to which I respond, "Yes...there IS a God. Even in Las Vegas".

"Seconds" - The Human League
"Ceremony" - New Order
