DECADE - some final thoughts

So the final DECADE event, our 2-Year Anniversary, took place on Friday, March 9, 2007. We had a good turnout as friends and family helped us end our little nightclub in style with a great party. There was free Champagne at midnight and Candy and Skip blew out two candles on a beautiful DECADE cake that was shared with everyone. A good time was had by all as people danced and sang along to "Guilty Pleasure" favorites and a mix of our favorite themes. The final song was "Last Dance" by Donna Summer, and we all said our tearful good-byes. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll start DECADE up again!

And now a few words from Candy:

"DECADE was a fantastic experience for me. I had never produced a nightclub event and the thought of it seemed unreal. Coming up with an idea for a new club was probably one of the most entertaining parts of the process. Skip and I had some pretty outrageous concepts, but after much consideration, decided on the details for DECADE. Skip brought great experience to the process and made the learning curve for me pretty painless. An unexpected and added bonus was learning to DJ from Skip.

I think the thing I enjoyed most about DECADE was getting to know so many wonderful people. I feel like my circle of friends has increased ten fold. DECADE was always a labor of love and we wanted to expose amazing DJs and provide a social oasis for our friends. Most of all, we wanted to have fun.

I thank everyone who was involved with DECADE. From the DJs to the regulars, the bartenders, club owners, friends and family; you made it fun and you made it DECADE. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your amazing support."

"Candy and I had talked about doing a club together for quite a while. Candy had been an invaluable help to me behind the scenes at New Wave City for four years, so she knew what it took to run a club. Finally we approached the owner of the Cherry Bar with this odd little concept we had come up with for a club called, DECADE.

It was always fun trying to come up with a new and interesting theme for each event. One night Candy and I sat at the bar at Strangelove and wrote down every theme idea we could come up with on a cocktail napkin. I pinned that napkin to my bulletin board and we used almost every idea on it. We only repeated a theme once when we did three "Guilty Pleasure" nights in-a-row because they were so much fun!

We loved being at Catalyst Cocktails and hope all of you will continue to support and attend events at the bar. We were so comfortable there that eventually DECADE felt like we were having a party with all of our friends in our home.

Most of all, I enjoyed the opportunity to work with Candy. She was a pleasure from beginning to end. Candy never got the credit she deserved because people would assume because of my success at NWC, that I was calling all the shots. We were, in fact, an equal partnership and at least half of the credit for keeping DECADE going for two year should go to her. And it was also extremely rewarding for me to watch as Candy progressed so rapidly into the excellent DJ that she is today."

And the other reason is because when Candy and I first talked about opening a club together, we were going to do a 70’s Disco club. Then we said, what about doing a different decade theme for every event? And then finally we ended up going with the format that you knew and loved, of a different decade every hour.

"WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?" NIGHT
Six Degrees of Songs – Connected in Some Way
Play "What’s the Connection?" and win prizes!
Two rounds starting at 10pm

HOW TO PLAY:
At 10pm get an answer sheet from contest host, Skip.
Listen to the first 1980's song played by DJ Candy.
Write down the name of the artist/band and the name of the song.
The next song will be connected to the previous song in some way (other than being from the same decade).
Listen to the next song.
Write down the name of the artist/band, the name of the song, and what the connection is to the previous song.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

Examples of connections: same song title, shared band member or producer, same album name, same subject matter in song, etc.

SCORING: One (1) point for each correct connection. Person with the most points wins!
TIEBREAKER: Most correct artist/band names and song names.

The 1970's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) gets all Glamed up with some Bowie, some T. Rex, and maybe a dash of Roxy Music, and weaves it all together for a connected picture of 70’s music like some giant connect-the-dots portrait of Richard Nixon. Scary, and a little bad too.

10-11pm
The 1980's
DJ Candy (DECADE) starts the "What’s the Connection" contest off with a set that may include "Candy Girl" – New Edition, "Candy" – Iggy Pop, "I Want Candy" – Bow Wow Wow and still more sweet treats from the most delicious DJ around. Four out of five dentists recommend DJ Candy for their patients who eat DJ’s.

11-12am
The 1990’s
Tomas Diablo (Strangelove, Rock This Town) continues with round-two of the contest and sends you on a connected song journey through the 90’s with songs like "Pump Up the Jam" and "Pump Up the Volume". Not sure if Tomas will be dressed like Hans or Franz, but it sounds like he’s here to Pump! [handclap] You Up! Hear me now and believe me later...

The 1980's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) spins your favorite 80’s connected songs. See if you can follow the links from Depeche Mode to Yaz to Erasure to The Cure to Duran Duran and on and on. Will he Go! or Don’t Go? Either way, as long as you Wake Me Up Before You Go Go ‘cause I’ll need a ride home at the end of the night after collapsing from dancing too hard to this set.

The 2000’s
DJ Candy (DECADE) spins the newest Indie, Pop, Electronica and remixes in what has quickly become a don’t-miss-this-final-set tradition that has been packing the dance floor at every event. 3. Lust (the prelude to 1 or 2)
4. Drinking (also a prelude to 1 or 2)
5. Drugs (I miss those days when people didn't look at you like you were a leper
if you said that you, on occasion, like to partake of a reality-altering substance.

Back from Vegas

Just got back from a week in Las Vegas. it was HOT! Literally.

So I'm hanging at the pool at Caesars Palace with all these old folks from Wichita and Yoohootieville and they all got their farmer john tans ...uh...like me.... and blaring from the pool loud speakers is Joy Division and some really early Cure. This went on ALL WEEK LONG! It was surreal.

My daughter swims up to me and says, "Dad, they're playing the Cure", to which I respond, "Yes...there IS a God. Even in Las Vegas".

What are they classified as? I always thought Amy Lee was Goth/Industrial. When we did a bit of research some [Christian] sites list her/them as being a Christian band. What's the deal?

We have 115 people on this tribe and only fraction of you speak up and participate. DECADE is all about bringing different people and types of music together and having a great time doing it.

We came up with the idea for our next event to really get a taste of all the different folks who come to DECADE. All the Guest MCs are tribe members and regulars at our event. We will also be giving 3 lucky patrons the chance to MC their own set of 80's music, that night, at DECADE. So, start making a list of your favorite 80's tunes and mark your calendar for July 7th.

Decade Idea

Ok, so as I was sitting here listening to "Bad" by MJ, they cut into "Fat" by Weird Al and that got me thinking... How about a Parody Hour? I think there is enough out there to fill an hour, maybe do something like the first hour could be Parody's like "Eat It", "Roaches", etc. and then the next hour could be the original's like "Beat It", "Rumors", etc. There could also just be a sort of "Dr D" hour with just the type of stuff that you would have heard on Dr. D (including original songs that are not parodies, like "Fish Heads")

Ok, am I crazy? Just me rambling maybe, but I think it would be cool. And I bet there is someone else out there who might think so as well...

In Honor of Friday's Summer Music Dance Party...

What songs/bands bring back the most summer memories for you?

Mine would be The English Beat. One high school summer was dedicated to hanging out all day poolside and blasting their albums loud enough that you could hear the music in the backyard; and probably the whole neighborhood. Every day was gloriously lazy and it was the summer I had a skater boyfriend who would ride his skateboard 5 miles to my house every day. We went to huge parties in huge houses, dancing in nightclubs and took weekly trips to Santa Cruz to watch surfers and have bonfires at sunset. It was one of those summers that felt like a teen movie.

Your huddled masses yearning to DJ...

Seriously, we've decided to give a voice to all the DJ-wanna-be's out there.
The variety of music that is the concept at DECADE, always seems to inspire
people to make A LOT of requests at our events. Well, what if you could actually
play your request at the club instead of just requesting your request?

(Huh? What'd he just say?)

Well, here's what we did. We wanted to give the DECADE Tribe members first chance
at an opportunity to "DJ" at the July DECADE. We printed out the entire membership
of the DECADE Tribe and made it into a poster. Eliminated anyone who doesn't live in
the area. Placed the poster up on the wall. Placed a blindfold on an impartial neighbor
and had her throw darts at the poster. After several misses (because, as with all of the
"great ideas" that come from DECADE-planning meetings, there was alcohol involved),
she managed to hit four of you. All four of those stuck in the face with a dart have confirmed
their willingness to participate as guest "DJ’s".

But, they won’t actually DJ. They’re more like MC’s - Master of Ceremonies – AKA, "record-picker-outers".
They decide what songs they want to play from Skip’s amazing library of ‘80s music
(or bring their own vinyl/CD’s) and hand the selection to either Skip, Candy, or John ,
who then actually spin it. (Just like MC Brain Damage - AKA P'lito from DECADE Tribe,
will do at the June 2nd event)

Now, I know what you’re thinkin’- "I WANNA PLAY!"

Do you feel lucky? Well do you, punk? Three more people will win 20-minute sets.
We’re not sure yet how we’re going to pick the three additional MC’s, but we do know
that you will have to be present at the event to win.

You win, you DJ. Got it? Good!

Downtown at the Warfield....WAS Niteclub Night

okay so last night I asked Tony, who's been around BGP for EONS, whether the Warfield was a club at one point....he said YES, for a hot minute (early 80's)...these two people (their names I think both began with "J") had a club there I guess AFTER the shows were over for the night called 'Downtown" or something...he also said they were the ones responsible for ripping out the seats on the main floor....thank god for that!

Okay so just thought I'd post since I finally had a chance to ask!

Savoy, CBGB, I-Beam, The Hacienda or Popstarz...

If you could be 21 years old and part of a club scene in its height, which would it be?

I think I would have to choose CBGB's. I have always had a soft spot for punk rock boys and it would be cool to witness such a great part of music history.

Then again, I love to swing dance and the fashion of the 40's is one of my faves.

But, the I-Beam would have been great just to see the transition in music when New Wave hit.

Come to think of it, I would have loved to have witnessed the whole Madchester scene.

Oh well, I guess it's like candy...I can't decide which flavor is my favorite.

Sometimes a DECADE event is fun, and other times, like last Friday night, is really, really fun. I mean, why wait for Halloween once a year when hostess (and now DJ too) Candy has a different candy treat for you every hour. Plus there was the soundtrack game where you had to know the name of the song being played and the movie soundtrack it was from. Every hour a person or a team with the most correct answers won a DVD from that DECADE (one team actually got 26 out of 26 from the 1970’s soundtrack set- wow!). And who would have thought that people would actually dance to Star Wars Theme by Mecco? They did- I saw it. Too fun!

The person or team with the most points at the end of each set will be crowned the "Soundtrack Brainiack" for that hour.

Really Weird Crossovers

So, I'm just sitting at home, innocently watching VH1 Classics and this video for the song "I'm Burning for You", by The Blue Oyster Cult comes on.

I don't remember ever seeing this video in the day, but what the hell? It is this really weird crossover of Rock n' Roll band with 80's New Wave Images.

I kid you not, the lead singer is decked out from head to toe in gold lame'. The shirt zips down the front on one side to make that really goofy triangle fold overs, tight shiny gold pants and yes, gold shoes. The guitarist and bassist are wearing black shirts, black leather pants and white pointy toed shoes. The drummer has on a shiny, purple lycra top and black and white zebra striped spandex pants. More than one of the guys has that weird Gibb Brothers beard/moustache combo. It really looked like they raided the closets of David Lee Roth and Gary Numan.

Was there a bunch of this going on in the 80's and I just didn't notice it? Or, was it so hideous that I just blocked it out?

Not at me.

It's our last Guilty Pleasures night at DECADE and tonight we are going to go out with a bang before we move on to more respectable themes!

We have fabulous guest DJs and great Guilty Pleasures sets of music. The Catalyst has a full dinner menu until 9pm, great cocktails and the staff is the best.

I will be making my DJ debut and spinning an hour of my favorite 80's Hair Metal gems. So, come early, drink plenty and get your groove on.
